The Spotlight Family: Protecting Vulnerable Children in Uganda
Bringing orphaned and vulnerable children out of isolation and into a loving school community with shelter, food, education, and belonging.
Overcoming Isolation in Mbale
In Uganda, the crisis of orphaned children remains a significant and heartbreaking issue. Decades of civil strife, the widespread devastation of HIV/AIDS, and a severe lack of basic medical care in impoverished areas have resulted in high adult mortality rates. Left without parents, children are often forced into dangerous labor just to feed themselves, facing deep isolation and social stigma. At the Chestertons International Foundation, we believe that an orphan should never feel cast aside. Through our $6,683 partnership, we are bringing these children out of the shadows and into a loving community.
Our Approach: The Spotlight Family
Spotlight on Africa began its vital mission in 2006 by establishing a single primary school in Mbale. Today, they have expanded into an incredible network providing clean drinking water, medical care, and adult education. We partnered with them to fund the Orphans and Vulnerable Children Programme. Our shared strategy relies on a simple yet revolutionary formula: through targeted project investments, we can completely rewrite a young person's future.
- Safe Havens: Secure, warm dormitories, clean clothing, and highly nutritious food.
- Primary Education: Guaranteed access to schooling and emotional counseling.
- Zero Stigma: Fully integrating orphans with the rest of the school and village community so they grow up with a profound sense of belonging.
From Child Laborer to Community Leader: Meet Innocent
Abandoned by his parents at the age of 14, Innocent was suddenly left entirely responsible for his five younger siblings. To keep his family alive and in school, he was forced into grueling labor, working for illegal alcohol brewers. Spotlight on Africa intervened, bringing Innocent and his siblings into a safe environment. Today, Innocent is a qualified primary school teacher and a proud Scout leader at Musoto Christian School. He recently led his school's Scout group to a historic second-place finish in a national competition held in Entebbe. Innocent stands as a living example to every child in Mbale that poverty is not a life sentence.
