Environmental Safeguarding: The Ocean Academy Programme
Funding UNESCO-backed ocean education that turns 40,000 young people into active environmental ambassadors.
A Shift in Humankind's Relationship with the Planet
For the Chestertons International Foundation, the protection of our environment is key to guaranteeing access to a safer and more prosperous future for all, regardless of geographical position or socio-economic status. Oceans regulate our climate, provide our oxygen, and sustain global life, yet they face threats from human behavior and systemic pollution. When 600 branch staff members across London were asked to vote for their nominated charity, an overwhelming 53% opted to support an initiative explicitly focused on eliminating ocean pollution. True change begins by shifting mindset, culture, and habits from the roots up.
Our Solution: Simplifying Complex Science for Youth
In 2021, the Foundation established a strategic partnership to fund the Ocean Academy programme, managed by Ocean Generation. Ocean Generation is a UNESCO-backed non-profit organization dedicated to completely changing the relationship between humankind and the ocean by focusing heavily on education for younger generations. The Ocean Academy programme targets children aged 5 to 16 years old. It breaks down and simplifies complex environmental science, educating young people on the fundamental importance of our oceans, the science behind climate change, and the critical use and management of plastics.
