Rescuing Food, Feeding Hope: The Felix Project Hub
Funding a large-scale food rescue operation that redirects surplus food from landfill to families facing severe food poverty across London.
The Paradox of Hunger Amidst Waste
In the UK, a staggering 9.5 million tonnes of high-quality food are thrown into landfills every single year. Yet, at the exact same time, millions of families are trapped in severe food poverty, completely unable to afford basic groceries. During the peak of the recent cost-of-living crisis, the situation in London grew desperate. Families were forced to choose between heating their homes or feeding their children. Some social housing tenants requested their gas supplies be turned off completely to avoid the temptation of using appliances they could not afford, while mothers survived entirely on baby formula just to pass fresh food to their toddlers. At the Chestertons International Foundation, we believe food security is a fundamental human right. No one should go hungry while good food goes to waste.
Our Strategy: A Large-Scale Food Rescue Operation
To combat this crisis, we directed a $13,365 grant to The Felix Project. The Felix Project has built a brilliant, sustainable system that solves two major problems at once. They rescue fresh, nutritious surplus food directly from farms, wholesalers, and supermarkets before it can be thrown away. Then, they instantly redistribute it to a massive network of over 1,119 community organizations, local food banks, primary schools, and neighborhood holiday programs.
